Descriptive Writing

STEP 1:

Allow students to open and explore the App. Don't ask students to record or think about anything. Just explore and have fun.

STEP 2:

Bring students back into a group and have a class discussion on what they found.

STEP 3:

Explicit instruction - what do we focus on with descriptive writing?

Did you notice in Hazel's world that things were moving? Use the following questions to prompt the next exploration in the App.1. What colours do you see?

What object do you see?

What's moving?

What did you you would smell if you were in the real forest?

STEP 4:

Allow student back into the App with the direct intention of taking screenshots or screen recordings of interesting scenes they could describe to someone else.

STEP 5:

Allow students to digital paste their scene into a computer program and write a description.

STEP 6:

Get feedback, revise, rewrite.

Example

The sun was shinning brightly as the waterfall smashed into the rocks below. The sound was deafening. A translucent rainbow appeared out of nowhere. A small rowboat rocked from side to side, struggling to remain steady as the constant water raced down the stream.
